Supita – Sawtelle

I never thought that Chinese baked goods would be available on the Westside. Now with Supita Tart Specialist joining 85 Degrees and Sunmery in West LA, I have options! Supita, an offshoot of the SGV’s Simply Splendid Bakery, sells egg tarts, meat pies, breads, cakes, and other desserts – even tofu pudding and black sesame pudding!

Like 85 Degrees and Sunmery, you can help yourself to the breads and buns, which are all in plastic bags. The freshly baked tarts are displayed on trays at the counter. It was too hard for me to choose, so I just ordered a couple of egg tarts and a couple of savory ones. The pastries were still warm and I could feel the heat radiating from the box.

They have HK and Portuguese egg tarts, egg white and one in a cookie crust. I tried both the HK and Portuguese tarts and they were good – were very light and not too sweet, with a delicate egg custard filling. They were pretty similar, but if I had to choose one, the Portuguese would be it. Now I just have to sample the egg white and the cookie crust ones to see which would be the overall winner!

I was delighted to find that they they had a few different meat pies – curry pork, bbq pork and chicken. I’ve been desperately searching for these on the westside with no luck, until now. I meant to only eat half of a chicken and half of the curry one, but they were still warm and so good that I ate them in their entirety.

Chicken pies have a tendency to have a sweet crust, but this one did not. It had peppery chunks of chicken, with some peas and carrots.

I look forward to trying more from Supita – especially the char siu sou (bbq pork puffs)! If I had to select which of the three bakeries were my favorite, Supita would be the it. They are currently in soft opening with hours from noon to 7pm, with free parking in the lot in back and metered street parking.
