One of my favorite meals of 2022 was from Borekas Sephardic Pastries in Sherman Oaks – definitely worth the drive over the hill! This takeout window specializes in bourekas, a baked puff pastry filled with various fillings. Borekas uses brown butter, instead of oil, in their phyllo dough, resulting in a light flaky pastry.

They have four flavors – cheese and zaatar, fungi/onion/truffle, potato & brown butter, and spinach & cheese. I tried a fungi and a spinach, preferring the spinach as it had a stronger flavor, thanks to the cheese. Orders come with tomato pulp, schug, pickles and eggs.

The tomatoes were a bit bland and I wound up adding the spicy schug for more flavor. It made a great dip for the pastries.

I enjoyed the pickles, but really loved the jammy soft-boiled eggs. They were irresistible.
Borekas is open until they sell out of pastries, so I strongly recommend making an advance order to secure your flaky goods. Warning – The bourekas will shatter into a shower of pastry flakes. Don’t attempt to eat them in your car, unless you want to be wearing your meal.
