Alfalfa – Santa Monica

With a name like Alfalfa, you’d expect a menu filled with health food items – definitely not the belly-busting breakfast burrito that I even found challenging to finish.  Alfalfa is a casual eatery on Main Street in Santa Monica, where you order at the counter and then find a seat either on their back patio or in front. The guy at the counter said they were known for their salads (of course) and gluten-free doughnuts, but neither of those intrigued me. I was led here, after seeing their breakfast burritos on Infatuation LA’s list of Best New Breakfast Burritos in LA.

Their burritos scramble the eggs along with the potato hash (which has red peppers and onions) and Oaxaca and Manchego cheese together and is served with avocado tomatillo salsa and a spicy salsa roja de arbol. You can either order it with chorizo ($11.50) or without ($9.50). It’s an extremely dense burrito. A normal person would be happy with just eating a half. I almost finished my entire burrito and had to skip lunch because I was so full afterwards. I knew I had overdone it when the guy sitting next to us, who had wrapped up half of his to go, let out a gasp when he saw me shoving that second half in my mouth.

Service is super-friendly! We asked for water and instead of just telling us to help ourselves to the water at the self-serve station, he didn’t hesitate to help us. If I return, I would split a burrito or might even try one of their famous salads in the unlikely event that I’m feeling healthy.
