Midoh – Sawtelle

Midoh brings Japanese comfort food back to Sawtelle, taking over the spot previously occupied by the much beloved Curry House.

This is Midoh’s second location – with the original branch in Rowland Heights – part of the Bishoman restaurant group, which runs the ever popular Daikokuya ramen chain. Instead of ramen, you’ll find several different kinds of udon, including a version with tomato sauce, bacon, black pepper and onion. There are also classics like Hamburg steak, katsu and curry.

Their katsu is perfection. We tried pork tonkatsu and chicken katsu, and both were crispy on the outside, moist on the inside. They are served with a katsu sauce and spicy mustard.

Their plain curry is just the sauce, no veggies or meat, and is served with a side of rice, salad and soup (miso or corn). Dark brown in color, it’s not too thick, nor too thin.

You can add on items to go with your curry – from tonkatsu loin to shimeji mushrooms. The reddish pink fukujinzuke (pickled veggie) that comes with the curry is the perfect accent to the slightly spicy curry. If you need to turn up the heat, there’s some chili oil to help.

Midoh is open for takeout and delivery, with some outside tables available for dining there. They do temperature checks, even if you are only picking up food. If you’re getting food for takeout, you may want to call them to place an order to avoid the menu upcharge with the online services. Service is very friendly, and the food is delicious. My family loved our meal and will be adding Midoh to our regular restaurant rotation. Situated on the second floor of a mini mall during a pandemic, they have a challenge ahead of them. I’m hoping that they succeed.
