I walked into Ginger’s Divine Ice Cream expecting to walk out with a billionaire…a scoop of Billionaire Brownie, that is. However upon gazing at the multitude of seductive flavors in front of me, my future date with a billionaire vanished. At Ginger’s you will find many temptations, the most available at an artisanal ice cream shop on LA’s westside.
Ginger’s bright cheery storefront is in a renovated house on Washington Blvd. It was their eye-catching exterior that piqued my interest, complete with astroturf out front.
When they claim to have the most flavors available, they aren’t kidding. I was overwhelmed by the 24 I saw in the case, only to be informed that there was an entire case on the other side of the counter. The seasonal, more unique selections are on the left, with the traditional flavors on the right.
If you’re a vegan, Ginger’s has several to choose from, including a sweet potato flavor (sweet potato?).
Should you not be in the mood for ice cream scoops, there are pops and some really good-looking cookies.
Or better yet, you can get an ice cream sandwich with these beauties flanking a scoop of creamy deliciousness.
While I was reeling from the shock of having so many choices, my non-adventurous daughter easily focused in on the classic case, selecting a scoop of cookies and cream. She later apologized to me for being so boring.
With the mantra “two is better than one” in my head, I went for a split scoop. Before I had even entered the shop, I had figured it would be Billionaire Brownie and German Chocolate, but all that went out the window once I sampled that Strawberry Purple Basil. The purple basil gave it a unique, almost savory flavor, that had me hooked.
To keep it company, I added the Black Raspberry Chip, which had big pieces of raspberry still intact.
I have eaten a lot of ice cream in my life, but I have to say that was impressed by Ginger’s. Divine ice cream? Yes, it is.
