B Sweet – Sawtelle

Playing to the kid in all of us, Chef Barb Batiste creates desserts that make adults giddy with nostalgia. B Sweet started as a dessert truck business before setting up a permanent location on Sawtelle. Famed for their bread pudding and halo (donut ice cream sandwiches), B Sweet announces a new menu every week, luring customers back with fresh offerings.

Oddly enough, I’ve never partaken in the bread pudding nor the halo, mostly because I’m always stuffed whenever I’ve dropped by, forcing me to pick up treats to enjoy later.

Always on the menu are the Fudgiest Brownie and Cookie Monster. The brownie is a large and can be easily shared by two, if not more. If you eat it there, you can get it warmed up with a scoop of ice cream, whipped cream and chocolate sauce on top. Likewise, the Cookie Monster is huge, around 8″ to 9″ inches in diameter and can be warmed up with the same toppings. It’s so big, that when I ordered it, along with the Fudgiest Brownie, the cashier double checked to see if I knew how big it was, worried that I had ordered way too much.

Chef Barb’s Filipino background comes into play with some of the desserts – particularly the use of ube, purple yam, in many of the items. Ube cheesecake was a stunning purple color, with the ube giving the cheesecake a unique rich flavor.

Another menu staple is the Sluttiest Brownie. Described as having “five layers of sin,” the brownie is layered with graham crackers, marshmallow, Oreos, chocolate chip cookie, with a fudge topping. This slice of sin only costs $6, and it’s rich enough that you can sin with a friend, or two.

Chef Barb lets her creativity show with themed menus like the Girl Scout Cookie that had a Thin Mint Cake (pictured at the top) and a Samoa cake. Last week was their Star Wars menu in honor of Star Wars Day akaMay 4th (may the 4th be with you) with Kylo Ren Red Velvet Cake (with contrasting black frosting) and Princess Leia Cinnamon Bun Cake. When the specials are available, you’ve got to move on them, because when they’re gone, they’re gone (or at least until next year). Never fear though, as you’ll always find something deliciously decadent to eat at B Sweet.
