Tasty Noodle House – Sawtelle

Look out, Sawtelle. A part of the San Gabriel Valley just landed in your neighborhood. Last week, Tasty Noodle House opened their latest location, along the stretch of ramen shops, bringing Shanghainese cuisine to Sawtelle Japantown.

Taking over the spot previously occupied by Restaurant 2117, Tasty Noodle House has a small patio area, along with the larger dining room. The menu is HUGE – I will go out on a limb and say that it’s probably the most extensive menu of all the Sawtelle restaurants.  Excluding beverages, over 150 items are listed. Not only are there several kinds of noodles (both in soup and without), but there are dumplings and many entrees on offer. It’s a bit overwhelming – I had to reassure myself that I would just have to explore more dishes on subsequent visits.

Xiao Long Bao

Xiao long bao, steamed soup dumplings with pork, were nicely executed, with a thin delicate outside wrapper which tore easily, releasing the requisite juices.

Spicy Fish and Tofu

The spicy fish and tofu definitely had a kick, so much that with my low threshold I downed a couple of glasses of water to help cool the burn.

Vegetable Chow Mein

The vegetable chow mein came with an assortment of exotic mushrooms, bean sprouts, bamboo shoots, carrots and a sprinkling of greens. My daughter could not stop eating them, even after she declared herself full. The portion of noodles were generous and not too greasy.

Service was friendly, although a bit slow and disorganized, as they’re still ironing out the kinks. There’s something for everyone here, including many vegetarian dishes (which are indicated with a leaf). With their large menu, they’ll be giving ROC Kitchen up the street a run for their money. I’ll be spending my money at Tasty Noodle House, working my way through their menu, thrilled not to have to trek to the San Gabriel Valley for authentic Chinese food.
