Tikifish – Palms

Poke shops seem to be popping up everywhere these days. So while some neighborhoods have two poke places in the span of a couple of blocks (I’m talking about you, Beverly Hills and Westwood), Palms has just one – Tikifish. Luckily for the people in Palms, Tikifish is a solid poke shop, offering fresh bowls made to order.

Tucked in a small mini mall, Tikifish is decorated with Hawaiian beach decor. You place your order at the small counter where your bowl will be created right in front of your eyes.

As with most poke places, prices are on the high side. A small bowl, which looks like it’s maybe 4 inches in diameter, runs around $10. For a couple of dollars more, you can get the medium, which is a decently sized serving.

You can either build your own bowl – selecting a base, protein, mix-in, sauce, sides and topping – or go with one of the poke or ceviche classics.

Tiki Tuna

The Tiki Tuna consisted of ahi tuna, sesame soy sauce, green onions, wake and sesame seeds. With sushi rice as a base and citrus ponzu sauce, the medium-sized bowl was quite filling. Normally I avoid green onions in my bowls because I don’t like the aftertaste, but somehow these weren’t quite as sharp, perhaps being mellowed out from the sauce.

Aloha Albacore

The Aloha Albacore came with a garlic ginger sauce, cucumbers, crispy onions and pickled ginger. Of the two bowls, the Aloha Albacore packed a higher flavor punch – thanks in part to those crispy onions (note to self: add fried onions next time). The fish in both bowls was fresh, cut into nicely-sized chunks.

On a hot summer’s day, a poke bowl is one of those perfect foods – light and healthy, yet filling. Even though Palms may only have one place for poke, I’d say that with Tikifish they don’t have a need for more.
