bb.q chicken – Sawtelle

If you’re thinking about going to bb.q chicken on Sawtelle, be prepared to wait. And wait. And wait. After being told 30 minutes, I waited almost an hour for my order, making me wonder what was going on in back. Were they chasing chickens around, attempting to catch them to be cooked?

I had tried placing an order over the phone, but no one ever answered. Not wanting to use one of the third-party services because of the jacked up prices (plus the restaurant has to pay their fees), I placed my order in person.  I was surprised to see that the prices were higher than what was listed on their menu online (kimchi fried rice was $14, instead of $11, and fishcake ddeok bokki was $16, instead of $13). The eight-piece wings was $15.50 – pretty pricey considering it’s just counter service. I was so grumpy by the time I got my food that I was kind of hoping my family wouldn’t like it so I’d never have to return.

Turns out, my family loved it. At least my time waiting was not wasted. My daughter scarfed down the soy garlic wings, which were nice and crispy. She found a hair in one of the wings, but at least it was the last one of the bunch.

The fishcake ddeok bokki was the perfect dish for my husband the heat freak. I loved the suppleness of the rice cakes, though it was a little too spicy for me overall.

The kimchi fried rice was the right spice level for me and had chunks of chicken and a fried egg on top. It was a pretty healthy portion and I had leftovers for another meal, which kind of made up for the fact that it was $14 (instead of the $11 on the menu of the website). A week later, my husband asked about picking up food from here again – that’s how much he enjoyed it. I said I’d have to give them a bit more time to get their act together. Here’s to hoping it happens sooner, rather than later! If you decide to visit bb.q chicken, I suggest getting a boba tea and leisurely strolling Sawtelle, or better yet, go across the street to Tenkatori and get some karaage to tide you over.
