At Somisomi, eating fish for dessert is oh so sweet. Even those who don’t like fish won’t be able to resist one stuffed with Nutella – especially when that fish happens to be a taiyaki, a fish-shaped waffle cone, cradling a swirl of soft serve ice cream in its gaping mouth.
Somisomi specializes in Ah-Boong, soft serve ice cream served in a fish-shaped waffle cone. When I visited, the ice cream flavors reflected their Asian roots – milk, matcha, ube and black sesame. Likewise, red bean, a typical filling in Japanese taiyaki, is available, along with custard and Nutella.
The taiyaki are freshly made – batter is poured into fish-shaped molds creating a hollow waffle cone. After a quick cool down, they’re ready to be filled – first with your choice of filling and then ice cream.
There are eight different toppings available. Toppings are unlimited so you can add as many as you’d like at no extra charge. Your ah boong is finished off with either a strawberry or a macaron, making your treat even more Instagrammable.

The ice cream was nice and creamy. The flavor of the black sesame was pretty mild. You could have told me it was milk, and I would have believed you. The matcha was a little bit stronger, but not overwhelmingly so. I would recommend eating it with a spoon because the ice cream melts quickly, in order to avoid adding to the puddles of melted ice cream that dotted the ground.
If you are a messy eater, not that hungry or gluten-free, you can get the ice cream in a cup for $3.75 and still take advantage of those unlimited toppings.

So the next time you’re craving something sweet, consider getting fish over at Somisomi.
