Imagine at place in Beverly Hills where you have to eat with your hands. If you want utensils, too bad. They don’t even stock them at Harajuku Crepe, which brings Tokyo-style crepes to Beverly Hills.
Located in a small modest storefront along South Santa Monica Blvd, Harajuku Crepe only has a handful of seats. A dramatic chandelier hanging from above reminds you that you’re in Beverly Hills.
As a warning, there’s a sign at the register detailing their store policy:
Harajuku Crepe has both sweet and savory crepes, including one filled with yakisoba. You can choose from five different flavors – for those who are gluten-free, there’s also buckwheat – and add your choice of fillings. We ordered one green tea and one marbled chocolate since they were running low on chocolate batter.
My daughter’s marbled chocolate crepe contained Nutella and vanilla ice cream. She declared it the best crepe she’s ever eaten.
I chose a green tea crepe, with whipped cream and black sesame ice cream.
I loved the delicate layers of crepe coupled with the black sesame ice cream, which was pretty mild in flavor. As the sign had said, the crepe was the perfect ratio of fillings to crepe. I had exactly enough to fill my crepe, yet not so much that stuff was falling out.
At Harajuku Crepe, you can enjoy one of Japan’s great culinary exports. Oh, and go ahead and eat it with your hands. It’s not like you have a choice.
