Previously operating under the name “Young Bud,” this matcha purveyor was a regular fixture at Smorgasburg LA. After too many questions about if there was a cannibis connection (there wasn’t), they renamed themselves Sip and opened up a permanent location in Westwood Village.
With matcha currently trending as a health food, thanks to its anti-oxidants and metabolism-boosting properties, the time seemed right for a brick-and-mortar store so matcha addicts can get their fix on a regular basis.
Sip scouts ethically-sourced loose leaf tea leaves, straight from Japan. Organic non-GMO milk from Straus Family Creamery is on hand, as well as soy, coconut and oat milk. If boba is your thing, that’s available too.
In addition to matcha, Sip has milk teas, teas and coffee The aloe matcha was refreshing, not too sweet, thanks to the use of simple syrup, instead of high-fructose corn syrup.
Their matcha soft serve ice cream uses that Straus cream as a base, with a light dusting of matcha powder. If you’re looking for an excuse to enjoy ice cream under the guise of doing it for health purposes, you’ve found it.
The name may be gone, but they’ve still retained their turtle mascot from their Young Bud days. Even without that cannibis connection, Sip is still growing, with another location to open in Rowland Heights. Sip, sip, hooray!
