For the price of a Starbucks coffee, you can get a cup of coffee (or tea) and a slice of cake at D’Ange Bakery. Their $5 happy hour is offered all-day, every day at this San Gabriel bakery.
D’Ange is an Asian-style bakery, so their baked goods are lighter and less sweet than their classic French counterparts.
The Asian influence extends to the flavors of cakes offered – like taro, lychee and green tea.

Cakes here are very light, closer to a spongecake in texture and taste. My mother got a slice of the chestnut cake, hoping to find something close to what she had eaten in Vienna. I don’t think she found it, but she still enjoyed it. The cake was not sweet and the filling had a very faint chestnut taste.

My daughter, the chocoholic, selected a slice of chocolate mousse cake. The cake was fluffy, with the slightest hint of chocolate to it. Usually she complains that cakes from Asian bakeries aren’t very good because they aren’t that sweet, but somehow this one managed to hit the spot.
One of the good thing about Asian cakes is that it’s practically impossible to feel guilty eating them because they are so airy and seem like they barely have any sugar or dat. I prefer feeling hideously guilty when eating dessert, but if Asian-style baked goods are to your liking, you will love D’Ange Bakery.
