The Bigg Chill – Westwood

Expansion is usually seen as a sign of success. However when it comes to frozen yogurt, usually a chain’s speedy expansion results in its quick demise. Maybe that’s why The Bigg Chill has managed to stay in business for over 25 years, while competitors like TCBY, Red Mango and Pinkberry have come and gone. With its one location at the corner of Olympic and Westwood Boulevards, The Bigg Chill has managed to keep a steady flow of customers, who come from far and wide, for their yogurt.

Established in 1990, the color and decor scheme hasn’t changed much since. There are at least eight fat free flavors on any given day, with Ghirardelli Chocolate, Peanut Butter and Vanilla Classic always on offer.  With changing dietary needs, The Bigg Chill adapted, adding a dairy-free choice and “Carblite” choice to their menu.

Unlike Yogurtland, The Bigg Chill still operates the old-fashioned way with preset sizes and the employees at the counter dispensing your yogurt and toppings. Adding a topping costs $1.75, but you can split it into two or three different toppings. Getting the toppings on the side is an option that will give you a better bang for your buck, since the portions tend to be more generous. The most popular topping is chocolate chip cookie dough, and if you order it on the side, you’ll get what looks like at least half a cup of cookie dough to enjoy.

The parking lot is very small, so be prepared to park on Westwood Blvd., Olympic Blvd., or on one of the adjacent residential streets.  On warm nights, the parking lot is a complete madhouse and the line for the register snakes out the door. I’m convinced that the Penguin’s across the street has managed to stay in business because of customers who see the crowd at The Bigg Chill and give up. The line moves quickly, so if you are patient, you’ll get your frozen yogurt. If you’re not patient, there’s Penguin’s directly across the street. They’ll be happy to see you.
