HoneyMee – Sawtelle

It’s another hot day in Los Angeles. Brian’s Shave Ice is still closed for remodeling (who knew it would be blazing hot in February), but HoneyMee, which is also located in the Olympic Collection, is open for business. Serving what they call “True Milk Ice Cream,” HoneyMee sources their milk from a  family-owned certified kosher dairy.

HoneyMee looks adorable, with a black and white interior that has been meticulously designed and manages to evoke past and present in its appearance. The store is bright and very clean, and the employees are cheerful and friendly.

Their core product is that “True Milk Ice Cream,” which can be ordered in a cup (with or without toppings), a waffle cone, or even a sweet bun (the “Babee”). Since the name is HoneyMee, it only made sense to order one of the ice creams with either the honey swirl (“Sweetie”) or the a piece of the honeycomb (“HoneyMee”). The honey is locally-sourced and is 100% pure and natural.

Dear

My mother is a chocoholic so the “Dear,” with Ghirardelli chocolate sauce and sprinkling of French sea salt (ooh la la!) made sense.

I was a bit disappointed when my order appeared on the counter. The cups looked a little small to me for the price.

The ice cream was fantastically rich and creamy. In fact, I was surprised to find that the small cup of ice cream managed to fill my stomach so successfully that I wouldn’t have wanted to eat more (which is saying a lot for me).

In retrospect, I should have ordered the HoneyMee with just the honeycomb (hello, it’s named after the place) as the honey swirl overwhelmed the ice cream, making me want a glass of water.  When I discussed HoneyMee with friends who had also been there, they looked at me like an idiot for not having ordered the ice cream with just the honeycomb. Lesson learned for next time.
