Diddy Riese – Westwood

A quarter can’t buy much these days, but until recently, a quarter was enough to buy you a cookie from Diddy Riese. It’s impossible to have lived in Westwood and never eaten a Diddy Riese cookie (unless you have an allergy to cookies – if so, I’m sorry). Their cookies have fed sweet tooths at many bake sales, class parties, picnics and more. Having gone to UCLA, Diddy Riese was part of my life. Armed with a dollar, I would brave the long line and return to the dorms triumphantly holding a bag with four cookies.

Diddy Riese offers ten different flavors of cookies – ranging from the classic chocolate chip to more exotic fare like white chocolate macadamia nut. Personally, I prefer the snickerdoodle to the chocolate chip, though my daughter would argue otherwise.

In 2015, Diddy Riese hiked up their prices, and the cost of a cookie doubled to 50 cents each, causing quite an uproar among their loyal customers. Now, that same dollar only scores you two cookies, not four. The line outside the door hasn’t been quite as daunting since. Still, it’s the best deal on cookies in town.

The best bang for your buck is the ice cream sandwich, which costs $2. Considering the two cookies are a $1, it’s only a $1 more for the Dreyer’s ice cream in the middle. Before the price increase, the ice cream sandwich was $1.50 – the new price reflects a mere 33% price hike (versus the 100% for the cookies) as the ice cream still only costs $1 more. If you’re not in the mood for cookies (heaven forbid), a single scoop of ice cream is $1.50. For another 50 cents, you can get a second scoop too – deal!

An ice cream sundae, with whipped cream and chocolate and caramel sauce, costs $2. You can even add a cookie to it for a mere 25 cents!

Diddy Riese has yet to get onboard with the gluten-free cookies, but they do have ice cream and shave ice for those avoiding gluten. I’ve yet to see someone order shave ice, though it must have its fans there since it’s still on the menu.

As far as cookies go, Diddy Riese cookies aren’t the best in Los Angeles. However if you take price into account, there’s no better deal for cookies out there (if there is, please let me know)!
